They also claim increased levels of adiponectin, a hormone that helps regulate metabolism.This article reviews the current scientific research behind raspberry supplements and whether they are really worth considering.What is raspberry?Raspberry ketone         

Raspberry ketone is a natural substance that provides a strong aroma for cranberries.This substance is also found in small amounts of blackberries, cranberries and kiwifruit.It has a long history of use in cosmetics, and has been added to soft drinks, ice cream and other processed foods as a food spice.

In fact ... most people have eaten a small amount of raspberry ketone, either from the fruit itself or as an edible spice (3).Just recently they became popular weight loss supplements.


Even if the word "raspberry" may be attractive, supplements are not actually from raspberries.Raspberry ketone extraction from raspberries is very expensive, because you need 90 pounds (41 kg) of raspberry to get a dose of the required amount!


In fact, one kilogram (2.2 pounds) of the whole raspberry contains only 1-4 mg of raspberry ketone. This is 0.0001 to 0.0004% of the total weight.Raspberry ketones found in supplements are synthesized by industrial processes and are not natural (4, 5, 6).


Another reason for the appeal of this product is the word "ketone" - which is associated with a low carbohydrate diet, which forces the body to burn fat and raise the "ketone" blood levels.However, raspberry ketone has nothing to do with low-carb diets and does not have the same effect on your body.Bottom line: Raspberry ketone is a compound that gives raspberries a strong aroma and flavor. Its synthetic version is used in cosmetics, processed foods and weight loss supplements. 

                                                                     
How does raspberry work?        
The researchers were interested in raspberry because of its molecular structure.Woman with a bowl of raspberriesThey note that it looks very similar to two other molecules, capsaicin (found in peppers) and synephrine (stimulant).Several studies have shown that these two molecules can promote metabolism (7, 8), suggesting that raspberry ketones can have the same effect.When the researchers isolated adipocytes from rats and allowed to grow in the tubes, the addition of raspberry ketone to the mixture had two effects (9):

 
It increases lipolysis (lipolysis), mainly by making cells more sensitive to the effects of adrenergic hormone norepinephrine.

 
It causes fat cells to release more of the hormone adiponectin.Adiponectin is a hormone released by adipocytes and is believed to play a role in regulating metabolism and blood sugar levels.
                                                                   

The lean people have much higher levels of adiponectin than overweight people and the hormone levels increase when people lose weight (10, 11).

Studies have shown that people with low adiponectin levels have a higher risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, fatty liver, and even heart disease (12, 13).


Therefore, nature means that raising the level of adiponectin can help people lose weight and reduce the risk of many diseases.However, even if raspberry produces adiponectin in isolated adipocytes from rats, this does not mean that the same can occur in living, breathing organisms.

 Also keep in mind that there is a natural way to increase adiponectin. For example, exercise can increase adiponectin levels by 260% in as little as one week. Coffee is also associated with higher levels (14, 15, 16).

 
Bottom line: Raspberry ketone has a molecular structure similar to two known fat burning compounds. They can make isolated fat cells break down fat and release the hormone called adiponectin.


Some studies have shown its role in rats, but the dose is insanely highRaspberry ketone supplements have shown some promise in mouse and rat studies.The results, however, are not as impressive as what supplements manufacturers think.In one study, a group of mice were fed an unhealthy, rich diet. Some mice got raspberry ketone ... others did not (17).


This is what happened:


Morimoto et al., 2005 - Raspberry Ketones and Body WeightAs you can see, at the end of the study, mice in the raspberry group had a body weight of 50 grams. Mice without raspberry ketone body weight 55 g (difference 10%).Remember, mice in that study did not lose weight, they just increased less than expected.Another study was conducted in 40 rats and fed a fattening diet. In this study, rats given raspberry ketone had increased adiponectin levels and were protected from fatty liver (18).But ... I do not think you deserve your hope, because these are big doses.In order to achieve the same dose as the test animal (not recommended), you need to take 100 times the recommended amount.advertising

    
Bottom line: Some studies in mice and rats have shown that raspberry ketone protects against weight gain and fatty liver. However, these studies use a large number of doses that are much higher than what you would get supplemented.  

                                                               Does Raspberry Work in Humans?RasperriesUnfortunately, there is no single study of raspberry in humans.The only close human study uses a combination of substances including caffeine, raspberry ketone, garlic, capsaicin, ginger and synephrine (19).In this 8-week study, participants lost 7.8% of their fat mass, a decrease of only 2.8% compared with the placebo group (both groups also reduced calories and exercise).However, it is likely that raspberry has nothing to do with it. It can be caffeine or any other herbal medicine.

Really ... I look long and hard and I'm 100% sure there is no real evidence that this supplement can work in humans.From online forums and reviews, this model looks similar to other weight loss supplements. Some people lose weight, some people do not lose weight, some people in the supplement even when weight gain.It is important to remember that just because someone is on TV or someone you know to lose weight with raspberry ketone, that does not mean supplements have anything to do with it.


Even if people lose, maybe just a placebo effect.Many studies have shown that placebo (fake) can have an impact on people.Maybe they want pills to work, so they start to weigh themselves more often, eat more mentality, and feel more active in exercising.

Therefore, it may just be these behaviors that lead people to lose weight rather than supplement themselves.Of course, there is still the possibility that raspberry works, it just has not been proven yet ... but considering how incredibly high doses need to see the effect, then I personally think this is not possible.

 
Bottom line: There is currently no evidence that raspberry ketone supplements can cause weight loss in humans.What are the other benefits of raspberry ketone?raspberryOne study showed that raspberry ketone can have a cosmetic effect.When topically applied, as part of a cream, it has been shown to increase the hair growth of alopecia, as well as to improve the skin elasticity of healthy women (20).However, this study is small and has many shortcomings and should not be used for any evidence (21).

 
Bottom line: A small study shows that when given locally, raspberry can increase hair growth and improve skin elasticity.Side effects and dosesWomen suspect about taking pillsBecause they were not studied in humans, there were no data on potential side effects.However, as a food additive, raspberry ketone is classified by FDA as "usually considered safe" (GRAS).


Keep in mind that the FDA also places high-fructose corn syrup and soybean oil in the same category, so use large grains of salt.Watching online, there are some anecdotal reports of jitter, rapid heartbeat and elevated blood pressure, but this may be a coincidence.The mouse and rat studies used large doses and did not notice a deleterious effect, and therefore appeared to be safe in the test animals.Due to lack of human studies, there is no scientific support for the recommended dose.The recommended range for different raspberry supplements is 100 mg to 400 mg, once or twice daily.

 
Bottom line: Because there is no human research, there are no good data on side effects or scientific recommended doses.
                                                                         


Should you try raspberry ketone?In all the weight loss supplements that I have reviewed (including Yangzi syrup and disappointing Garcinia cambogia), raspberry ketones are the least desirable.They seem to work on isolated adipocytes and test animals to feed extreme doses, but this is definitely not associated with the usual dose recommended by humans.

Given that we need such a ridiculous dose to achieve the fat burning effects seen in animal studies, I highly doubt that raspberry ketone will have any significant effect.Just for self-experimentation, I even tried the raspberry ketone for a few days. The only effect I noticed was fruit hiccups.



If the odor, uncontrollable belch is a huge problem in your life, then perhaps the raspberry ketone is something you want to consider.But if weight loss is your goal ... then you may lose more weight from burning calories to the shops and buy pills than the pills themselves.

You'd better put your time and energy on other proven weight loss methods, such as eating more protein and cutting carbohydrates.Raspberry ketone is not only a waste of time and money ... they also distract what you do, and it is actually important that this is a lasting and beneficial change in your lifestyle.One day we may find a supplement that actually works for long term weight loss ... but that is definitely not the case with raspberry ketone period.
